I first received Parrot Tulip bulbs as a gift from Holland, but when they blossomed I
thought there must be something wrong and threw them away. The curled and
twisted petals were flamed and feathered -- not what I was expecting in ordinary
tulips.

In fact, Parrots are mutants or hybrids of several kinds of ordinary, late blooming

tulips

(such as the

Kaufmanniana

and

Gregii

groups). The Dutch began producing them

as early

as the 1640's

and some of the newer ones have been developed with radiation

techniques.

Eventually I acquired a taste for the Parrot Group of tulips, and nowadays I design
bouquets with them whenever available here -- I wish I had those Parrot bulbs!
